Your first walk

The first few walks feel a little unusual, and that's normal. Your legs are walking while your hands and head are busy with work. Start slow and keep it short. Within about a week, you won't think about it anymore.

  1. 1

    Find your pace

Start slow, whatever your fitness level. Around 2 km/h is a normal pace, 3 km/h is close to jogging. Walk faster on muted calls or routine work, and slow down for precise mouse work or when you're talking in a meeting.

  2. 2

    How long on day one

Start with 20 to 30 minutes. Within about a week, most people are walking up to three hours a day. For me, that's 7,000 to 8,000 steps; yours will vary a little with your height and stride.

  3. 3

    Shoes or socks

Barefoot and socks both work well; barefoot gives a bit more grip. Shoes are fine too, but they leave dust, so give the surface a quick wipe if that bothers you. Without the front cover, stepping too far forward can cause a slight pinch. Shorter steps fix it within minutes.
