A cheap walking pad is a sealed plastic unit built for a one year replacement cycle. This is wood and steel, put together the way good furniture is put together.
Everything that moves is a part you can name, see and replace. Nothing hiding, meant to be opened, moded and fixed.

The Office Walker is tested to 150 kg. That load goes through a wood frame and Italian steel bearings, not a plastic case wrapped around a motor, so the number is the limit of the frame rather than the limit of a drive.
Nothing about that changes as it ages. There is no motor in there straining against the weight, and the parts that do carry it are wood, steel and bolts, all of which you can see and any of which you can replace.

You can see every part that moves, and reach it.
Every moving part is visible and replaceable at your desk. There is no sealed unit in there, and nothing that turns the whole pad into landfill when one piece wears out.
Plastic looks its best on day one. Wood does not work that way.
A sealed plastic pad looks best in the photograph and worse every day after, until the motor gives out and the whole thing is landfill. Wood and steel wear in rather than wearing out.
Because every part is a material you can name, nothing about it is a mystery and nothing is disposable. That is the difference between something you own and something you replace, and it is why I built it this way.

Ask what it will look like in year five, not year one.
Every product looks its best in the photograph. Wood and steel is a bet on the years after that, because both age into something you still want in the room, and both can be repaired by anyone holding the right part.
A sealed plastic shell around a motor makes the opposite bet. It is cheaper to build, it looks fine on day one, and when the part inside fails there is no way in.
